Description

This is an exquisite Chinese carved, pierced and gilded panel of four figures riding mythical beasts each accompanied by a smaller standing figure on a red background and framed in silk and a narrow gilt frame. Certain features are highlighted in black such as the hats, hair, eyebrows, beards and the eyes of the animals. The carving is of the finest quality and most likely dates from the 19th century with the framing later in the third quarter 20th century. The label for the framer Wah Cheong Est. 1902, 7-13 Wellington Street, Wing Ting Buldg, Hong Kong is attached to the reverse.

The figures riding beasts probably represent the 'immortals'. The top right figure is riding a tiger, the lower left is riding a deer while holding the peach of immortality and the figure lower right is riding a dragon fish.
