Description

This is a magnificent and imposing bronze group of 'The Three Graces' after Germain Pilon by the French foundry 'Susse Freres', late 19th century.

It is an extremely fine casting with intricate detailing of the hair, faces and dresses. Cast into the base and partly hidden by the round oak plinth are the words 'Reduction de Fille Sauvage' and the foundry mark 'SUSSE FRERES'.

It is a reduced copy of a monument bearing the heart of King Henri II which was commissioned in 1561 by Catherine de Medici. Germain Pilon carved the original from a single block of marble and the urn raised over the trio held the heart of the king. The urn was destroyed during the French Revolution but has since been replaced with a replica, the monument itself having entered the collection of the Louvre in 1816.
