Description

This is a box-shaped hibachi made from the finest burr elm veneer, Japanese early to mid 20th century. The light coloured burr elm is contrasted with a darker coloured straight grained elm on the lipping, the oval inset handles and in the dovetail joints on each of the corners. It is lined with a heat resistant sheet copper.

Hibachis were used for heating food rather than for cooking, though they were often used in conjunction with a cast iron kettle for boiling water for tea. This hibachi is a particularly fine example, not just because of the figuring in the wood but also in the craftsmanship. It would make a very attractive pot plant holder or could be used for storage on a kitchen countertop.
