Continental Copper Relief Plaque In Maple Frame

Description

This is a finely detailed copper relief sculpture of a medieval scene signed L. Birnbaum dating to the second half of 19th Century. It is glazed and framed in birds eye maple with an inner gilt slip.

The scene depicts Lohengrin, a character in German Arthurian literature. The son of Percival, he is a knight of the Holy Grail sent in a boat pulled by a swan to rescue a maiden who can never ask his identity. Richard Wagner's opera 'Lohengrin' of 1848 is based upon the legend.

Dimensions: Frame 31 x 26 cm Plaque 24 x 18 cm

Condition: The plaque is in very good condition with just a few small greenish coloured spots where there has been some oxidisation. The frame which is of similar age is also in good condition.
