Description

This is a map of NORTHERN ITALY drawn and engraved by John Rapkin for "The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World" published by Tallis & Co in 1851.

It is an attractive and decorative mid 19th century map of Northern Italy with vignette engravings of The Grand Canal - Venice and St Peter's - Rome, together with images of Roman Catholic clergy and a peasant.

The vignettes were illustrated by A. H. Wray and engraved by J.B. Allen.

The map has original outline hand colouring which has been augmented with later hand-colouring. The later colouring of the vignettes and border, which was undertaken by a specialist, has enhanced the decorative appeal of this attractive map. It is printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso and unfolded.

It is in excellent condition and from the preferred edition without the central fold. This map was removed from an Atlas, the covers were in poor condition and a few of the maps were already missing.

Mounted within a cream mount card and protected in cellophane, the map is ready for framing or for giving as a gift.
