Description

This is a delightful Japanese domed-top, black lacquer sewing box with finely detailed mother-of-pearl inlay dating from the Late 19th Century.

The top and all four sides are decorated with mother-of-pearl which shimmers with a variety of colours from silver through pink, green and yellow. The top depicts an oval panel with small birds flying over flowering plants in a rocky landscape. The corners of the top are occupied by a large flower among scrolling foliage. Flowers and scrolling foliage also complete each of the four sides.

Mounted on the two narrow sides are finely cast lion mask handles with rings. The box stands on brass lion's paw feet which are also well cast. There is a working key which appears to be original to the box.

The box opens to reveal a lift-out tray which is compartmentalised, however, there are no contents.

Condition: The box is in very good antique condition with minor marks and scuffs commensurate with its age. Some of the mother of pearl is missing but the pattern is retained by the presence of slight depressions in those areas of missing inlay with the result that it is only apparent on close inspection.
