Description

Fantastic quality antique Russian lacquer cigarette case painted with a Troika scene, factory stamped on reverse and dating from c.1900.

The painting is charming, comprising three horses, two of which are brown flanking a central white horse, pulling a cart with three peasant girls driven by a driver in a red smock. Two of the girls are wearing vivid red head scarves. The lacquer is covered in a craquelure glaze which does not detract from the painting (please note that the craquelure is less obvious than the zoomed-in photo would suggest).

The lacquer & leather case opens to reveal a purple silk-lined interior with embossed leather pouches for holding cigarettes. The metal mounts are engraved. The clasp opening the case works perfectly & top and base are flush with each other. The craftsmanship throughout is stunning.

The back of the cigarette case is stamped with the factory mark.
