Description

Large antique Indian Nagina carved ebony dressing box with fold-out mirror

Dating from the mid 19th Century this box originates from the northern province of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The box is made from ebony which has been exquisitely carved on the top and all four sides with geometric and floral patterns.

There is a brass escutcheon, two brass catches and the lid articulates on two pairs of brass hinges.

The original mirror is framed in sandalwood with pewter stringing.

The interior is divided into a number of open compartments.

The carved top and sides are in excellent condition as is the folding mirror. I have seen another of these toilet boxes with a more elaborate interior so it is possible that this was once the case with this box.
