Antique Indian Nagina carved ebony & sandalwood-lined stationary pen box in stunning original condition

Dating from the 19th Century this lidded box originates from the northern province of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The box is made from ebony which has been exquisitely carved on the top and all four sides with geometric and floral patterns. The detailed carving extends to the underneath of the lid.

The box is raised on a moulded and carved plinth.

There is a brass escutcheon and two brass hinges.

The interior of the box, including the sides of the lid, is lined with sandalwood.

There are two fine splits in the ebony top which extend about 1 1/2" from the edge, but they are hardly visible. It lacks a key. This is a particularly fine example of its type.
