Antique silver pocket watch, Spikins for Dent.

The watch has a good quality stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed ‘Spikins from Dent, Chronometer Makers to Her Majesty, 4 High Street, Deptford, SE’.

Dent would have been the manufacturer of the watch while Frederik Spikins, listed as a jeweller, and goldsmith and silversmith, would have been the original retailer.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1912, with a case maker’s mark for the Coventry watch case maker Clarke & Ward.

The case is in good condition, just the odd little mark but nothing serious at all. Originally there would have been engine turned detail to the back of the watch but this has worn down over the years. Central vacant cartouche.

The acrylic lens has minor marking, nothing serious at all.

The dial is signed Spikins from Dent, 4 High Street, Deptford, SE. Pin set blued steel hands, sunken subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There is chip just under the centre, and there are quite a few hairlines but most are very faint and difficult to see with the naked eye.
