Description

Antique Thomas Russell pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality 15-jewel (2 adjustments) stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Record Watch Co, and it is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 57mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop so larger than the usual standard 50mm diameter watch. The case is gold plated and was made by the Illinois Watch Case Company of Elgin, USA. The case has the distinctive stepped detailing as often seen on Thomas Russell pieces.

The case is in very nice condition, just very light surface marking, nothing serious at all. Engine turned detail to the back which is still nice and crisp, and a vacant cartouche to the centre.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is signed with the name of the original retailer, Thos Russell & Son, Liverpool.

Thomas Russell & Son was a well respected business having achieved a Royal Warrant as watch and clock makers to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The dial is in lovely condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes with a good quality 18ct gold filled single chain, again of larger than normal proportions so it sits really well with the watch. The chain measures 31cm long including the T-bar and the fob.

Also included is a fob with enamel detailing to the front and the wording, ‘Forward’, ‘North Birmingham Schools’ Sports Association’. The back of the fob has the inscription, ‘Junior League Winners, Cowper St, S Sheasby’. The watch, chain and fob came into us together so we presume they have always been together, our guess is that whoever owned the watch must have won the medal as a boy and fitted it to his watch chain.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
