Antique silver pocket watch by Verdan & Renfer
Description
Antique silver Systeme Glashutte pocket watch by Verdan & Renfer. The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement was probably manufactured by Verdan & Renfer, self proclaimed inventors of the Systeme Glashutte calibre… see the advert from Verdan & Renfer published in 1891. The advert is not included in the sale.
Watches from the Glashutte area of Germany were of the highest quality and were much sought after. They were made by some of the finest watch makers including Ferndinand A Lange, Großmann or Assmann, and they were very expensive.
The Glashutte name was held in very high regard and, as such, other watch manufacturers decided they would like to use the Glashutte name for marketing purposes, hence System Glashutte was born but it has no links to original Glashutte manufacturers.
The movement in this particular watch is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 935 silver and there are Continental hallmarks inside both of the case backs. The front and sides of the case are in good condition. The case back originally had engine turned detail but most of this has rubbed over the years, and there is a crease at the bottom of the case back.
The glass lens has a couple of marks but nothing serious at all.
The dial is in lovely condition with original pin-set hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
