A superbly fully hallmarked 9 carat yellow gold shield shaped locket which is embellished with deeply symbolic motifs. Shields symbolise the desire of the donor to protect the wearer. The front is embellished with acanthus leaves and a shield cartouche which is inscribed F M in an elegant font. The back is ornamented with ivy leaves. Acanthus leaves represent everlasting life. Deep friendship, fidelity and wedded bliss are represented by the depiction of ivy leaves. The hinge and catch work perfectly. This locket was assayed at Birmingham in 1905.
