Antique Solid Silver Novelty Pounce Pot

Photos

Description

This is a lovely and unusual example of a solid sterling silver pounce pot.

Pounce pots were used as desk accessories, containing as they did the sand-like substance used to blot ink. All pounce pots were gilded inside, as the pounce powder attacks the silver without any protection in place, and so they are not easily confused with pepper pots.

This pot is hallmarked on the base for Birmingham 1891, with the maker's mark of Stokes and Ireland (William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland)., and features Atlas holding up a the world.
