Pair Irish 19th C oak estate bookcases by JJ Byrne
Description
A rare pair of Irish William IV estate library bookcases by John J Byrne of Dublin. In golden quarter-sawn oak with attractive ‘tiger grain’ or medullary rays. Featuring decorative carved scrolling corbels, each has a square cornered moulded cornice above a pair of shaped glazed doors on stepped out bases with two drawers above a pair of cupboard doors and on a conforming plinth base. Fitted with adjustable shelves to the upper sections and each with a removable shelf to the base. One bookcase with pigeon holes for filing and remnants of old paper labels including for ‘Bulls etc’, ‘Forestry’ and ‘Kavanagh Letters’.In very good condition and stamped ‘J J Byrne, Henry St, Dublin’ to the interior of one, able to store a run of books up to 14.3m / 47ft long, marks and signs of age commensurate with age including a small patch under to the top of the plinth directly under one of the corbels, some drying lines to the side, some locks replaced and comes with keys for the upper doors.
John J Byrne, and later John J Byrne & Sons, was an esteemed cabinetmaker and upholsterer working in Dublin in the 19th century, situated on Henry Street (as were the celebrated firm of Robert Strahan & Co), by the 1880’s the firms reputation had grown such that it was recorded as supplying all the furniture for the new reading room in the local Chamber of Commerce and for the new jury room at the Four Courts, Dublin.

Each bookcase divides into 2 sections for moving and the parts should be screwed together on assembly.
