Description

An attractive oak sideboard in the Cotswold School style by H Morris & Co of Glasgow. In light golden quarter-sawn oak and contrasting dark oak knob handles, it features unusual stepped-in edges to the top, legs and stretcher. With a rectangular veneered top above three short drawers flanked by cupboard doors and standing on square legs joined by an H-stretcher, very similar to some Heals design. Both cupboard doors are fitted with locks by ‘H Robin & Sons, makers, London EC 1’ and come with a working key.

In good condition and recently cleaned, revived and finished with a traditional wax, the cupboards have each had a chipboard shelf added, the veneer has worn through in places on the top and has some minor nibbles to the back edge. Marked to the back for H Morris & Co, Ltd and numbered.

Morris Furniture was founded in the 19th century to supply wooden furniture for trade and commercial ships travelling the globe but their quality craftmanship soon made them the supplier of choice for some of Scotlands most iconic luxury hotels including Gleneagles and Turnberry and also for some the of the luxury ocean liners of the day being built on the Clyde including the 1st class cabins on the Queen Mary. The reputation the company had built for design and craftsmanship saw it become a favoured supplier of the royal family and in 1947, Morris Furniture was asked to design and fit a special bedroom suite as a wedding gift for HM the Queen and Prince Phillip on behalf of the people of Scotland. The ornate furniture was created from Scot’s oak taken from within the royal family’s Balmoral estate and upon completion the suite was exhibited at the company’s showroom to give the Scottish people the opportunity to see their gift to the royal couple before it was sent to their first marital home at Clarence house. Today the furniture resides in Sandringham.
