Description

American Forecast Barometer by Joseph Davis & Co. of 6 Kennington Park Road, London.

Very scarce barometer and possibly the finest example on offer today, worldwide, if you can indeed find another?

The oak case has mellowed beautifully over the last 140 years, some images were taken utilising a flash whilst cleaning was being undertaken so it may look slightly lighter or paler in those images.

The barometer is truly stunning, it has undergone light cleaning of the seven day dials, brass-work, the inner and outer case and wide-bore glass tube.

The mercury has been set at the correct level and is functioning exactly as one would expect and achieving the correct pressure readings with both verniers holding their positions tightly once set within the 10 inch dial.

Both the main dial and lower glass are original, the silvering to the Fahrenheit thermometer marked Winter/Summer is original, it even has the original cork stopper and rod with the paper instructions to the top… The fretwork panel is immaculate with no splits or losses and looks as if it’s spent it’s entire life in the correct position (inside of the glass), all too often these were positioned outside of the glass exposing them to damage and contamination.

Below the glass set in the moulded serpentine valence is the brass bound compass, again working correctly. The lower finials to each side of the compass are the originals, however the upper ones are missing (this is very common, as they shrank over time they inevitably fell-out, got placed in drawers and forgotten about). They would be very easily replicated by a cabinetmaker, restorer or hobbyist from the two remaining originals.

This item is for collection only, it’s far too complex to send in the post, nigh on impossible in fact.

This is one of the finest examples of this barometer I have ever seen, and a rare opportunity for any collector of scientific instruments to add this museum worthy example to their collection

Time and assistance shall be given to the purchaser in preparing it for transit upon collection.
Two Ivorine setting keys will be supplied and are modern day replacements.

105.5cm in height
