Ellicott London Oyster veneered Longcase clock

1 of 6
Description
A unique and exceptional George II Longcase clockPlease read in full
Solid oak carcass veneered in Walnut to the sides and the outer trunk, inlaid with burr Yew (possibly Thuya?) and Laburnum oysters to the leading edge of the hood door, trunk door and the base.
Unfortunately the clock with its dial marked ‘Ellicott, London’ has had a replacement movement, however, it is a quality London movement of a slightly earlier period, most likely dating from 1690 to 1700.
This wasn’t always done to deceive, sometimes being replaced if its original was beyond economical repair.
It is my opinion and not beyond the realms of possibility that the dial and case are correct, the dial fitting the mask as one would expect, Ellicott was after all renown for his very elaborate cases, and this case is nothing short of exhibition / museum quality.
The hood with barley twist columns set with Corinthian capitals and laburnum oysters to the door with dual brass banding to the original glass, something that one rarely finds and only on exceptional cases.
To the trunk the long door with strap hinges and original lock is again laburnum oyster veneered banded in ebony and set within burr yew, with walnut cross banded mouldings
The wheatear engraved 12 x 16.5 inch brass dial with matted centre chamfered and engraved calendar aperture and subsidiary seconds is of a very thick gauge, centred boss to the arch for Ellicott , London.
The movement dating to around the late 1600’s with five knopped and finned pillars, inside count-wheel and is of 8 day duration.
The seating board is flush with no additions or shims to the cheeks, and the clock is running well.
