Description

Chinese late-19th-century inlaid black lacquer cabinet

(Qing dynasty) – a magnificent example from the Canton region of China.

Standing at 134 cm high × 110 cm wide × 56 cm deep.

The aged black lacquer surface shows an unmistakable genuine patina—natural lacquer, gilt worn in places, honest marks of time.

A beautiful 19th-century cabinet that’s survived 120–140 years. Handmade construction—hallmarks of authentic Chinese 19th-century furniture.

The signs of age and use only deepen its character, provenance, and appeal. This piece represents the finest of late Qing dynasty craftsmanship.

The decoration is richly layered and labor-intensive, featuring beautifully hand-painted scenes:

• Deep, high-relief carving creates dramatic three-dimensional scenes across the main door panels and lower apron—vibrant warriors drawn from Chinese literary and historical traditions, armored figures charging on horseback, wielding spears and swords in dynamic poses, galloping horses, mountains, trees, and swirling clouds.

• Gilt highlights in gold leaf—architecture, foliage, borders—strike against the deep black lacquer ground.

• Delicate inlaid floral motifs and accents throughout the panels catch light with subtle opalescence, lifting the piece far beyond standard gilt work.

• Borders and frames repeat key-fret geometrics, auspicious cloud scrolls, bats (symbolizing happiness), and floral vines in gold—framing smaller upper panels of gatherings and processions.

A stunning statement piece—perfect for an entry hall, dining room, or bedroom—ready to grace any space.
