Pair Of Glass Vases Black Amethyst Japanese 1880's

1 of 6
Description
This striking pair of hand painted vases is made of handblown glass known as black amethyst. Hand decorated in enamel paints with an attractive and colourful Japanese scene of a small bird surrounded by tree blossoms.Japan's artwork is replete with symbolism. The Japanese bush warbler (uguisu) is a bird with a distinctive breeding song that can be heard at the start of spring through most of Japan. The plum tree is associated by the Japanese with the start of spring, as its blossoms are amongst the first to open during the year. Plum blossom also symbolizes vitality, hope and renewal.
Black amethyst glass was made from the 1860's onwards. As is common with glass, many pieces are unsigned. We do known that this attractive type of glass was produced by high quality glass makers in France and Bohemia (now Czech Republic). However, the vases could also be English. Black amethyst glass was also made by craftsmen in Bristol, and the late Victorian period was a extremely popular time for oriental themed furniture and home decoration.
As mentioned the vases are hand blown, the glass has a deep black colour and could almost be mistaken for a piece of ceramic. Two rough scars of the making process are still visible underneath the feet. This are called puntil marks, the place where the iron rod of the glassmaker was attached to the molten glass. Once the forming process is finished, and the shape of the vase is completed, the rod is simply broken off.
