Description

A superbly detailed small terracotta sculpture of the classical Italian Grand Tour figure of Spinario, or boy with a thorn, who was a devoted shepherd boy.

This small late 19th century study is very finely hand detailed in particular to the head, face, hands and feet. The red terracotta from which this figure is made is in perfect condition with no restoration and displays a lovely age related subtle patina.

The figure has been modelled with a circular base, and the front face is the hand impressed words Pastor Fido, meaning Faithful Shepherd.

Italian circa 1890

Height 13.5cm x width 9cm x depth 10.5cm
