Description

George Henry Paulin was a distinguished artist sculptor who produced fine and important bronzes and wood carvings, many of them portraits of the rich and famous. After the First World War where he served with distinction, he was commissioned to produce many large bronze war memorials for public display. Throughout his life, his work was widely exhibited at top academies including the RA, RSA the RI and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. He was later elected a fellow of the RBS. He was born in Muckhart near Dollar, Scotland and later attended the Edinburgh College of Art under Percy Portsmouth. He also studied in Rome, Florence and Paris between 1911 and 1914, the outbreak of the 1st world war.

This remarkable carved walnut portrait bust depicts a young oriental boy with a kind soft expression. It is finely detailed and hand finished with all the gorge and chisel cuts displayed on the surface giving this fine piece a wonderful textured and tactile finish. It is worked in rich dense figured walnut which has a superb colour and patina and is signed on the reverse with a good strong signature.

Scottish, circa 1920.

Height 48cm x width 30cm x depth 22cm
