1821 Broadside For Prisoners At The Assizes

Photos

Description

An 1821 broadside listing all of the prisoners who were at the Stafford Assizes on March 15th 1821 with offences ranging from theft of a turkey, stealing a pay, forgery through to murder. The broadside was printed by R. Heppell, Cary's Court, Dale End in Birmingham. Such broadsides were popular at the time as there was a fascination with court cases- many of which ended in public executions which were still a spectator event where whole families went to watch. There are few such broadsides surviving -more common are such books as the Newgate calendars which were published at the time for the prisoners at the Old Bailey. But surviving provincial broadsides such as this as much more scarce.

The broadside has historically been laid onto thick paper and we have had this professionally farmed.
