Rare Regency stage coach licence plate

Photos

Description

A supremely rare English stagecoach licence plate. The plate, similar to cabs nowadays, was the identifying number of the stage coach in the early 19th century. This is a relatively low number so it is an earlier example. G R, stands for George Rex, King George, and the crown is displayed on the plate.

It would have hung on the outside of the stage coach as can be seen from a print of the time.

Early original coaching items of this standard are increasingly rare on the open market.
