Description

A pair of mid-20th century Chinese Goldfish or Koi Carp Bowls / Jardinieres raised on hardwood stands. These very large porcelain bowls are decorated with famille rose floral panels interspersed with court scenes, one where a lady is in a bath chair in the foreground before a seated official in a pavilion and various on-lookers / attendants. The other panel depicts tea being served to an official and his wife in a pavilion with attendants in the background. These panels are mirror images on the bowls.

The rims are decorated with flowers and small plaques of flowers and butterflies.

Carp and goldfish represent long life and wealth in Chinese symbolism and the interior decoration of these bowls depicts fish swimming amongst fronds of aquatic plants.

The bowls and stands are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips.
