Description

This is an absolutely stunning and highly decorative very large glass apothecary jar dating from around 1890. The beautifully hand painted and gilded lidded jar stands 64 cms tall. The jar is reverse painted with the Scottish Royal Coat of Arms and bears the motto 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit'. This is the Latin motto of the Royal Stuart Dynasty of Scotland. It has been loosely translated in Scots as “wha daur meddle wi me” or in English “No one can harm me unpunished”.

The crest is in really good condition with the ‘magnesia’ contents label still reading well. The gilding is in good condition and remains bright unusually the majority of the gilding to the oversized gilt glass lid remains.

Jars such as this were used in Chemist shops as large display pieces and because of their fragility good examples are extremely hard to find.

A fabulously decorative piece, the last two photographs show the jar outdoors in bright daylight.

Delivery would have to be with our trusted antiques courier as this is obviously a very fragile item, and costs £50 to most UK destinations.
