Description

A fine oil on canvas landscape scene by William Bartol Thomas 1877-1947. A wonderful and unusual oil by this highly regarded Lincolnshire artist who chiefly and almost completely worked in watercolour so a great rarity. The work shows a rolling landscape which will be in Lincolnshire with a horse and cottage in the foreground and in the distance a church spire. Thomas was brilliant at capturing detail while still retaining an ethereal feel of light, colour and place. The painting is in good untouched condition with some beeswax floated on the reverse to give support. The work is typically signed to the lower right ‘W.B.Thomas’. William Bartol Thomas was born and lived all his life in Boston Lincolnshire, a natural artist he only worked in the county, mainly in watercolour and often in miniature. Travelling around the county by bicycle and train he recorded this beautiful landscape. He seemed to have been uninterested in exhibiting having only placed a work at the Royal Cambrian Academy however his obvious talent has been recognised particularly within the county of Lincolnshire where his work is highly collected. The painting is framed in a simple but substantial gilt frame which is most likely the original, it is in good untouched condition. The whole is a great landscape work by a highly desirable artist working in oils, it has a wonderful peaceful presence and is ready to hang. C.1900.
