Description

An important set of three medieval English carved oak panels depicting King Ninus, King Latin and King Robart, originally from the refectory screen of Salley Abbey in Yorkshire, now called Sawley Abbey in Lancashire.

The Historical Account of Salley Abbey, written by J Harland in 1853 states on page 74/75 as follows

"There were formerly, in one of the neighbouring houses, which contain so many fragments from the Abbey, three oak panels, each about sixteen inches in height and eight in breadth, bearing within arches, supported on pillars of the Tudor period, half length figures of grim-visaged personages, armed, crowned, and ensigned respectively with an axe, a sword, and a sceptre purporting, according to legend in black letter script beneath, to be the verie effergies of "King Ninus", of King Latin" (Latinus), and of " King Robart". These were probably portions of the screen of one of the refectories " It is difficult to account for the occurrence of the latter name in such company, supposing it to have Scottish origin, except on the supposition of its commemorating a proprietary offering, after some of the northern invasions, which occasionally brought the prowess of the Bruce even within this distance to the border"
