Rare 17th Century English Oak Spice Chest c1680.
Fine and rare original 17th century oak spice chest with beautiful colour and form.
Interior fitted with eight drawers each with original handles, two drawers have been re-lined at a later date. Original handmade iron strap hinges, unusual to find a spice chest with two doors as most common to find a single door. The escutchon is an early replacement. Iron lock is present and there is a key although the lock is apparently seized. The left hand door has a very interesting fully working original iron sprung loaded catch bar that attaches to an iron fitting mounted on runner beneath the drawer. Overall a very beautiful and rare little chest with few restorations considering its great age and use.
