Description

An important early Victorian satinwood side cabinet with profuse carved and original parcel gilt decoration. The cabinet has a ribbon carved edge to the top, above Vitruvian scroll carved frieze, above a central recess with leather inset and mirror back, above two drawers, flanked by cupboards with carved tapering columns with Corinthian capitals. The plinth features carved paterae and a central leaf carved motif, and is raised on short carved and turned feet. The cabinet doors feature Chubb locks, stamped ‘696761’, which can be dated to 1852.

Of particular note is the fineness of the carving, particularly the detail to the stop-fluting.

All in all a superb example of 19th Century British cabinet making undoubtedly by one of the great makers of the period, though unfortunately not stamped or labelled to signify which.

Condition & Details of Restoration
This item is in generally excellent original structural condition. There are old marks underneath the polish as would be expected on an item of this age, but nothing unsightly in our opinion we believe the photographs to be representative. The leather inset has been replaced. There is an old repair to a split in the top, only now visible as a faint line. The repair is sound and not moving.
