Description

We have for sale a rather lovely late Ming period Chinese Swatow Porcelain Dish dating to the 16th/early 17th century.

This very large Ming period Chinese Swatow dish or bowl is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a Pheonix amongst Pionies within six panels of fruiting branches on a geometric ground. A very similar dish of a comparable size can be found in the Augustus the Strong’s (1670–1733) collection held at Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Crick in his book "Chinese Trade Ceramics", suggests a date of manufacture to the early 17 century for what he describes as these rare rim to rim decorated examples of Swatow ware porcelain. This would date this dish to around 1600 to 1620.

This large Ming period Swatow dish is nearly half a meter in diameter (17.3 inches (44cm)) in diameter and is in a good antique condition other than the craqluer and relatively small rim repairs one would expect from a 400+ year old piece of Chinese Swatow porcelain.
