Description

We have for sale a lovely watercolour painting by the well known Clitheroe artist Elijah Cawthorne (E. Cawthorne 1844-1913).

This painting depicts a wooded riverside landscape in which a riding drover is watering his cattle and goats at a river crossing against a background of a distant arched bridge. The painting is signed to the bottom left by the artist. The painting probably dates to somewhere around 1880 or so and is presented in its original but re-glazed frame.

This is quite a large painting being 23.5 inches (59.7cm) high and 28 inches (71.2cm) wide including the frame. The painting is in a very good antique unrestored condition although there is a single small fox mark in the upper right quarter of the picture. The frame is in a very good unrestored condition with remarkably light wear for a frame of this age, although there are some marks to the bottom of the original gilt mount.

About the artist
Elijah Cawthorne 1844 – 1913 was a Lancashire artist based in Clitheroe who taught art at the Blackburn Academy for many years and painted rural landscapes around Clitheroe such as Downham Village and the Ribble Valley. Two of his works are in the public collection at Clitheroe Castle Museum. His son Frederick was also a landscape artist based in Clitheroe.

The works of Elijah Cawthorne and Frederick Cawthorne seldom come to market and are highly sought after by those with a love of the Ribble Valley and the Pendle region
