Description

We have for sale a lovely Victorian oil painting on board by the by the locally well known Clitheroe artist Elijah Cawthorne (E. Cawthorne 1844-1913).

This picture depicts figures and a horse and cart crossing a river bridge in a wooded landscape. The painting is signed and dated E Cawthorne 1871 to the bottom left. During re-framing the reverse of the board was found to be signed, dated and titled A Bridge on Brungerley Lane. It is probable that Brungerley Lane formed a component part of the old drovers road that later became the B6478 in 1930, in which case the bridge depicted in the painting may be an unusual view of Brungerley Bridge.

The painting is 12 inches (30cm) high and 19 inches (48cm) wide excluding the frame and is in a very good to excellent un-restored but re-framed condition other than some slight craquelure in places.

About the artist
Elijah Cawthorne 1844 – 1913 was a Lancashire artist based in Clitheroe who taught art at the Blackburn Academy for many years and painted rural landscapes around Clitheroe such as Downham Village and the Ribble Valley. Two of his works are in the public collection at Clitheroe Castle Museum. His son Frederick was also a landscape artist based in Clitheroe.

The works of Elijah Cawthorne and Frederick Cawthorne seldom come to market and are highly sought after by those with a love of the Ribble Valley and the Pendle region
