Description

We have for sale a lovely watercolour painting by the well known Clitheroe artist Elijah Cawthorne (E. Cawthorne 1844-1913).

This painting depicts figures in a field with cattle and sheep against the backdrop of the Ribble valley, the Edisford Bridge near Clitheroe and distant mountains. The painting is signed to the bottom left by the artist. The painting is presented in its original frame, upon the back of which is the original framers label (Edward Pye of castle Street Clitheroe). The painting probably dates to Elijah's later life (c1900) and was most probably framed after his death sometime around 1918 when Edward Pye moved to his York Street Clitheroe business address.

This is quite a large painting being 28 inches (71.2cm) wide and and 23.5 inches (59.7cm) high including the frame. The painting is in a good antique unrestored condition although there is some aging and a few light fox marks. The frame is in a very good unrestored condition with remarkably light wear for a frame of this age.
