We have for sale a lovely watercolour painting by the excellent Victorian artist James Burrel Smith.

This well executed painting by James Burrell Smith depicts a winter wooded river scene with a figure. The painting is signed to the bottom left J Burrell Smith and dated 1869. The reverse of the painting is also marked with in the artists hand with the title "Scene in Dumfrieshire" This title is visible through a perspex panel built into the back of the mounting. The painting has just been re-mounted fitted into a new frame and a section from the original mounting again marked by the artist in pencil with the title "A scene in Dumfrieshire" has also been attached to the reverse of the painting.

This watercolour painting is 19 (48cm) inches wide and 15 inches (38cm) high including the frame and is in an excellent condition with minimal fading.

About the Artist
James Burrell Smith (1822-1897), often referred to as Waterfall Smith, was a very highly regarded Victorian artist who painted in both watercolours and oils. As the name suggests he was well known for his excellent depictions of waterfalls, rapids and riverside scenes. He was born in the South of England, but moved to Northumberland in 1843 where he was trained by the Highland Lanscape artist Thomas Miles Richardson Snr (1784-1848). James Burrell Smith exhibited in Suffolk Street, London from 1850-1881 and examples of his work can be seen in the Alnwick Castle Collection.
