Description
We have for sale a very unusual Edwardian set of 4 hexagonal arts and crafts hexagonal dishes by the well respected early 20th century artisan Hugh Wallis. These hexagonal dishes are of a planished form each engraved with a Capital B to the centre within a ring of single dots. The rim of each dish is of a rope like form with again a ring of dots located towards the inner aspect. The engraving was obviously originally inlaid with pewter. The pewter decoration has rather typically for early Hugh Wallis pieces, been mostly worn away through years of use and polishing. Each Dish carries the distinctive Hugh Wallis impressed stamp.
Hugh wallis (1871 - 1943) was from a Quaker family, he studied at Herkomer Art School, Bushey, Hertfordshire (established in 1883 by Hubert von Herkomer), and exhibited 14 times at the Royal Academy. He established his own Altrincham workshop in 1900.
The dishes are each approximately 4 & 1/3 inches (11cm) in diameter from corner to corner and all are in a good antique condition although the inlaid pewter is mostly worn away.
