Description

For sale is a lovely silver William Comyns dressing table mirror.

This lovely English silver dressing table mirror consists of a silver backed mirror decorated with a lovely William Comyns embossed scene depicting a classical nymphs in a floral woodland bower. This beautifully decorated mirror extends down to a lovely richly decorated handle again depicting a nymph in a floral setting on both sides. The mirror is hallmarked for London 1906 and carries the makers mark for the very good silversmith William Comyns.

William Comyns began to gain popularity in the late Victorian and Edwardian period because of the high quality of his silver work and his wonderful silver inlaid tortoiseshell. This resulted in him supplying goods to some of the best retailers of the time including Tiffany & Co. Unsurprisingly William Comyns silver from this period is becoming steadily harder to find as pieces disappear into collections.

This particular mirror is is just short of 11 ½ inches long. The silver work is in a very good antique condition carrying clearly struck hallmarks, slightly rubbed makers marks but no real damage other than one or two pinhole sized dents to the edge. The mirror glass is in a reasonably good condition other than a number of surface scratches one of these is quite long but superficial and can be seen on the right hand side of the mirrored surface.
