Description

A rare and fascinating lead plaque featuring the crest of the cloth workers company. Displayed presumably like a fire mark on the outside wall of a shop or small factory by a member of the guild. The historic crest adopted in the 1600s features symbols of the trade, the sheep for wool, the teasel used to 'card' the wool and tenterhooks to hang the drying cloth. Initials and a date of 1829 are stamped on the background of the shield though the plaque itself may be of an earlier date. In good condition throughout with a nice oxidised and weathered crust to the lead but probably later paint embellishment. 32cm x 24cm
