Description

This is a very handsome small oak refectory table. It has well shaped and turned early 18th Century legs, square profile stretchers, and a carved frieze below the top on one side of the frame. The table-top is a single slab of early English oak.

Historically the table has been reconstructed.
There are old oak plugs to the top on each corner where it would originally have been pegged to the base.
The top probably had to be removed from the frame because it has warped over time. Braces were applied to the underside to reduce this movement and allow it to sit securely in position on the base.

The top has a wonderful colour and patination, and a wavy surface because of the movement, which adds hugely to its character. It sits firmly on the base because of the alterations.

The frieze being carved on one side only suggests it was intended to sit against a wall as a serving table / sideboard.
Its a perfect size and height also for standing behind a sofa to take lamps, books and photographs etc
