Quarter Striking,19th Century, Fusee Lantern Clock

Description
A purpose-made and high quality clock in fantastic condition by this prolific maker. The substantial and beautifully made, 5 pillar, double chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement. rack striking to the quarters and hours with 2 hammers on very well tuned, top-mounted bells - one inside the other and hung from the 'spider' with urn finial that is sprung from the tops of the further 4 corner urn finials. Also having a pendulum transit locking block and the backplate being engraved with "JNo WALKER. 230 Regent St.. & 77, Cornhill LONDON" And numbered "6384".
The engraved dialplate has a 6 1/4" diameter silvered chapter ring with bold Roman hour numerals, 1/2 hour cruciform markers and an inner, divided 1/4 track. The bottom is signed "Jno. Walker, London". Both blued steel hands are matching.
The brass case is in the usual Lantern clock form with corner pillars, finials and ball feet. The back and sides have removable doors. There are pierced cast brass frets to 3 sides the front also being engraved.
The quality of this clock cannot be overstated and it is not an older example with a replaced movement - it is exactly how it was made. No expense was spared during its manufacture and the weight alone is surprising. It was made in around 1870 as a high quality and very expensive reproduction and offered the benefit of not being required to hang from a wall, being of 8 day duration instead of only 1 and also being very accurate.
John Walker were prolific makers and supplied huge numbers of fusee dial clocks to the railway companies. They worked from various addresses and this clock can be accurately dated to around 1870.
Date19th Century :
1870
Dimensions15 1/2" high x 6 1/4" wide at the chapter ring x 6 1/2" deep including the door knob.
ConditionThe movement is working faultlessly, keeping time and striking correctly (and loudly!) on both of its bells. It has been well maintained and serviced probably within the last decade or so however, the bearings are extremely dirty and if left running for very long without a clean and service will begin to wear. Therefore, it will be supplied fully serviced and guaranteed. The case is good but because it isn't lacquered, has become marked in places from finger marks but these can be polished off. The silvering to the chapter ring is almost perfect.
