Description

A good, undamage English 'Chamber' or 'House' clock with verge escapement. Circa 1690.

The 30 hour duration, 2 train, chain driven movement with Verge escapement and short attached peardrop pendulum mounted to the rear. Countwheel striking the hours on the large top-mounted bell. Within the typical framed structure with iron back plate and probably original, opening and removable side doors.
Having 3 cast 'dolphin' frets the front being engraved and the 6 1/2" diameter silvered chapter ring having tall Roman hour numerals, an inner divided quarter hour track and Fleur-de-Lys half hour markings. Mounted upon the backplate that has scroll engraving to the centre and corners and the upper centre bearing the maker's signature of "Jo.s(eph) Buckingham. London". The rear has the usual 'hoop and spikes fixings.

The maker is believed to have worked at the Blackamoors Head and Dial in the Minories. He married Sarah Gutteridge in 1677 at Allhallows, London Wall. He was a maker of clocks and watches and his work appears to span the years 1685 until 1720.
