Description

Made of wonderfully figured solid elm, stained to a rich brown colour, this chest of two short over three long drawers is given an Arts & Crafts appearance by the superb brass handles shaped as inverted squashed hearts. The top and sides are each made of a single piece of timber, it stands on bracket feet and the applied mouldings to the front of the drawers, as well as the stiles, are made of mahogany.

It was manufactured by Warings shortly before they merged with Gillows in 1903. It bears both a Warings metal label and stamp.

DateArts and Crafts : Arts & Crafts Dimensions104.5cm wide, 100.5cm high and 54.5cm deep. ConditionThis is an extremely sturdy and well made item in lovely original condition with its original handles and key. There are several dark marks and spots commensurate with age, and the polish has worn in a few places on the top, but due to the colour and figure of the wood these imperfections are not prominent. The bracket feet, as well as one corner and one side of the top, have taken knocks but they are not unduly disfiguring.
