Description

An Unusual Antique English Naive School Painting.

19th century.

A very interesting quarter-length portrait depicting a rural gentleman.

At one glance, he appears to be dressed in a red hunting coat, with a white silk tie......yet he also sports a hat more commonly worn by a pheasant or labourer.

Gentleman or vagabond? Gamekeeper or poacher? It's hard to tell!

This curious little painting, when hung on the wall brings the sense that one is being watched this sitter is very much alive, looking out of the frame with a rather piercing gaze.

This piece has a wonderful, rustic and bucolic charm. The style and execution is somewhat naive and primitive, the oil paint laid down fairly thickly in places but with closer attention paid to the eyes, the curls of hair, the white tied bow.

The piece has been cut from the original stretcher and then laid down and stuck to a canvas of approximately the same age. This hasn't been done very recently: the painting is old and so too is the painting upon which it has been stuck. I haven't tried to remove the painting to see what lies underneath. The glue is old and I don't want to disturb it.

A wonderful painting for an interior.

I'm selling as is, unframed and unrestored and with considerable age-related wear (see condition below).

Dimensions -

10 x 14 inches

Condition -

The old painting cut and laid down to an old canvas many years ago.
Surface wear with some flaking and loss and extensive all over craquelure and blown mastic varnish.
Surface wear particularly pronounced to the lower right area.
Despite these 'faults' the painting succeeds and works, imparting a wonderful antique look and feel.
