Description

A Wondeful & Rare Antique Japanese Porcelain Garden Seat or Stool.

Dating to the late Meiji era (late 19th - very early 20th century).
.
Signed, as shown, with a painted seal mark for Kawamoto Hansuke VI (1844 - 1905).

Originating from Seto (Aichi Prefecture).

A very beautiful and inventive piece, modelled as a drum, with tightening rope and tassels, all fashioned from porcelain and in high relief.

A visually engaging, tactile and functional piece of porcelain.

The waisted body decorated in lovely underglaze cobalt blue depicting various flowers, leaves and grasses. The quality of the painting is just lovely.

These charming and functional drum-form garden stools were not made in vast numbers and were quite an undertaking for the potters to make. Today they are very hard to come by - especially in this condition. They make for very elegant and charming decorators / display pieces, perfectly suited to an interior or conservatory setting.

Christie's sold a very comparable pair (same form, size, decoration and age) fairly recently for $8125.

Sadly I have only one of these, but it's a beauty. A top piece for the Asian interior designer.

Dimensions -

Of large and handsome proportion. Approximately 48.5 cms tall. Please view the picture with the wine bottle to get some sense of scale.

Condition -

In overall very good condition for age.
There is some light surface wear to the upper seat area from use (light scratch marks and a little surface loss to the raised white slip design). Otherwise it is in lovely condition, as shown, and with no major faults. Minor stress lines internally from manufacturing (see shot of the interior) but this is not damage and perfectly in line with the manufacturing and age.
100% structurally sound. No restoration. No chips.

All in all lovely, honest and beautiful late Meiji era porcelain seat.
