Description

This is a Northern bronze sundial dating from the early 18th century. It has a scrolled gnomon, rose ornament to the centre, engraved coat of arms of three greyhounds and motto CITO PEDE likely to relate to the Whelpdale family. The engraved latitude 54 degrees 54 minutes places the location on a line between Newcastle and Carlisle.

It has been inspected and authenticated by Dr John Davis of the British Sundial Society. it measures 25.5 cm (10") square and 15 cm (6") high. There is slight loss and damage (as shown in the photographs) and rubbing.
