Description

A Rare and Important German Inlaid Walnut Kas or Cabinet, Dated 1665 and Retaining the Original Metalwork and Key.

The moulded overhanging cornice with ebonised detail above a frieze inlaid with geometric lattice designs and the date 1665. A further ebonised moulding separates the frieze from the two large doors which are inlaid with further geometric detailing on highly figured walnut laid at an angle to create a strikingly figured background. In the centre of each door is an inlaid panel showing the allegorical figure of justice, wearing a blindfold and holding her balance and sword. Below this are other inlaid panels depicting crowned lions, eagles and unicorns, probably allusions to the heraldry and status of the original owner. Perhaps this was a cabinet designed for a leading legal figure of the time hence the inclusion of Justitia or justice. The doors are flanked by ebonised barley twist columns with gilded capitals which have been beautifully turned and, beneath a projecting moulding, there are two drawers in the base. The whole piece then stands on flattened bun feet.

The metalwork on this piece is of superb quality. The lock and hinges have been fret cut and engraved and are the work of master craftsmen. In addition, the piece retains the original key which is a very rare survivor for a piece of this age and we find this amazing that it's still with the cabinet after 350 years. We have difficulty not to lose our house keys!! The key has been finely wrought from iron with a delicate bow, fine shaped baluster turning on the shank and a beautifully conceived series of key wards on the bit which allow it to operate the lock. No expense was spared in the construction of this piece which was clearly made for an important individual. It has great visual impact and is an example of furniture combining marquetry, carving, gilding and fine metalwork in a single piece. Clearly made as a bespoke commission.
