A Victorian walnut cartridge case by Holland & Sons, London

An unusual piece which is likely to have been a commission piece by the famous Victorian cabinet making firm. This unassuming but superbly made walnut box has a two sectioned interiors with its original foil type liner to keep shotgun cartridges dry whilst being stored. With stamps to the front edge of the box and Horne Patent hinges, this box is a perfectly functional piece of Victorian furniture for a game or clay pigeon shooting enthusiast.

Holland & Sons were a major contractor for the Government and HM Works throughout Queen Victoria’s reign and were also responsible for furnishing many of London’s Gentleman’s clubs of the period including the Army & Navy Club. Their company records are held at the V&A in numerous day books which outline the commissions undertaken for the gentry of the period.
