Description

Hutton-Clarke Antiques is delighted to offer this superb Normandy marriage armoire, dating from circa 1860 and crafted in solid oak.

Richly hand-carved throughout, the cornice and frieze display flowing floral and foliate decoration, with a pair of carved birds at the crest — traditional symbols of love and fidelity, signifying its original purpose as a marriage armoire. The twin doors are framed by elegant applied columns and enhanced by lovely quality brasswork, retaining their original keys.

Raised on carved cabriole feet with a shaped and scrolled apron, the piece possesses both presence and refinement. The doors open to reveal a well-appointed interior fitted with three internal drawers, offering excellent practical storage alongside generous hanging space.

The warm tone and attractive grain of the oak beautifully complement the detailed carving, showcasing the craftsmanship typical of late 19th-century Norman provincial furniture. Importantly, the armoire comes apart for ease of transport and installation.

A striking and romantic statement piece, rich in symbolism, craftsmanship, and regional French character.
