Description

An Unusual Victorian Ebonised Conversation Seat with Two Revolving Tub Armchairs. The curved and arched upholstered backs having sewn in braided divisions. Turned spindles below with line carved gilt highlights with scrolled and turned arm supports also with gilded highlights. The round revolving upholstered seats having sewn braided top edge with applied braided bases. These sitting on round bases again with applied braiding both on turned legs with gilt highlights on brass and ceramic castors. The seat and the base having a cross stretcher underneath which revolve around an iron holding spindle over 2 metal plates. The stretchers on the seat stamped by the maker J. Stevens the base stretchers both with a kite mark for December 1880. One side of the bases having a hinged flap the other having the brass holding clip which hold the chairs in place when used as a love or conversation seat. The upholstery is in fair condition apart from the applied braiding which is distressed and loose in places.
