Description

An excellent example of an early Marrow Scoop, dating from the middle of the 18th.Century
A superb set of hallmarks for London 1760
The maker`s mark - W.C for William Cripps.
The bottom hallmarks are some of the best. The shaping that is done to the scoop, after the silver is hallmarked, usually compresses the marks and distorts them, but not in this case. Just the left edge of the maker`s mark is missing, caused by the careless use of the punch.
Marrow scoops were made in a number of different materials, including wood and bone as well as silver. As the name suggests, they were used for scooping the soft marrow, which is highly nutritious, from out of the middle of cattle long bones after they were broken.
The original owner`s initials, C G F, have been punched on the back of the broader section.
